STATEMENT FROM THE WVUSU ASSEMBLY OF DELEGATES TO WVU FACULTY

September 11, 2023

Morgantown, WV - This week, West Virginia University’s Board of Governors will meet on Thursday (September 14) to hear public comments on the administration’s recommended cuts and reductions and on Friday (September 15) to vote on accepting the recommendations. The times set for the meetings are 10:30 AM and 9:00 AM, respectively.

We, the Assembly of Delegates of WVUSU, representing over three hundred fifty students, believe the decision to have the Board of Governors meet at those times was not a coincidence. Students and faculty will be in class during those times, and many community members will be working. By setting the meeting times in the mornings of weekdays, the Board of Governors has set up a barrier to attendance and participation, affecting many of those planning to have a physical presence at the meetings.

To ensure students can take advantage of their right to attend and participate in both Board of Governors meetings this week, the Assembly of Delegates requests faculty members to cancel ALL morning classes on Thursday and Friday. Furthermore, every notification to students of a class’s cancellation should explicitly state that it was canceled so they could be free to attend the meetings.

The Assembly of Delegates also requests all faculty members who oppose the recommendations to stand with students at both meetings.
